Widely known as the “Bus Man of India,” S. Bhupinder Singh Chadha is a visionary leader and one of the most influential figures in India’s passenger transport industry. With over five decades of experience, he has played a pivotal role in revolutionizing bus manufacturing in India and shaping the country’s transition to electric mobility.
His journey began in 1967, when, at just 21 years old, he took on the responsibility of supporting his family after the passing of his father. Driven by passion and perseverance, he established Azad Coach from a small garage in Delhi, building buses with his own hands to provide for his mother, two sisters, and five brothers.
Expanding the Azad Legacy
Recognizing the potential of the passenger transport industry, he expanded operations to Jaipur in 1968, setting up a full-scale manufacturing plant. His breakthrough came when Azad secured a major contract with Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC)—a milestone that marked the beginning of India’s shift from imported buses to high-quality, locally manufactured vehicles.
Following this success, state transport corporations from Jammu & Kashmir to Kerala sought Azad’s expertise, reinforcing its reputation for quality, innovation, and reliability. To cater to the growing demand in South India, S. Bhupinder Singh Chadha established Azad Coaches in Bengaluru in 1979, setting new benchmarks in bus manufacturing.
Revolutionizing Indian Bus Design
At the time, most buses in India were built on truck chassis, compromising passenger comfort. Under his leadership, Azad Coaches pioneered a transformation in chassis engineering, significantly enhancing the safety and comfort of long-haul and urban transport vehicles.

At 75 years old, his passion for innovation remains unwavering as he spearheads the development of next-generation EV buses, positioning Azad as a global player in clean mobility solutions.
